In this practice-based study, ambiguity is proposed as a catalyst for envisaging new ways of thinking about graphic design in addition to the functional imperative of the discipline. ![]() Yet, the possibilities of ambiguity remain under-explored in graphic design, a discipline predominantly (conventionally) concerned with the clear communication of a message. In disciplines such as literature and fine art, ambiguity is perceived as not only desirable, but inherent to the value of the work of art or idea, and its interpretation in the mind of the viewer. Intentional ambiguity enables multiple interpretations of a message, increasing richness of meaning, while adding pleasure through uncertainty and surprise. Ambiguity can arise from indecision, unintended confusion or as the intentional evocation of several meanings in the same image, object, situation or idea. ![]() ![]() ![]() These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Much of what we have grown accustomed to expect from a modern history play was brought about by Shaw’s originality and daring in challenging the hidebound practices and conventions of nineteenth-century historical drama. He is evident in the background of the works of minor playwrights such as Reginald Berkeley, Gordon Daviot and Clifford Bax as well as major playwrights like T. ![]() The immense influence he exerted in his own time and continues to exert among English playwrights of this century is reflected in the fact that nearly all the playwrights dealt with in this book mirror some measure of his impact. Most of the story seems to focus around the new danger facing the vampires – which I’ll call the Book of Unspecified Evil (but which is usually just referred to as “the Book”.) Since they killed off their old nemesis, the Omega, the universe decided to bring them a new one (to maintain the balance between good and evil and give the reader a good story).
